Summer School 11-14 Settembre 2013 – Maratea, italia

Partner: Regione Basilicata

The theme of the Summer School was "Euro-Mediterranean strategies - Political, economic and social dynamics" (5th edition). The 4 intensive days of training have deepened a series of strategic issues in the Mediterranean area, tracing the major challenges and opportunities that characterize the geopolitical and economic situation. Essential issues, such as the social turmoil in Erdogan’s Turkey, the evolution of the Syrian conflict and its consequences, the democratic demands that emerged during the so-called "Arab spring" and not yet satisfied, the geo-economic weight of the Gulf countries, the role of European countries in the Mediterranean chessboard, etc. make the Mediterranean the place of complexity, but also of great opportunities, both in the economic and political fields.
These issues were addressed thanks to the participation of Professor Valeria Piacentini (Professor emeritus of History and Institutions of the Muslim World at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan), Dr. Roberto Menotti (Director of Aspenia On-Line and Vice Director of Aspenia - Aspen Institute Italy), AMB. Eugenio d'Auria (former Ambassador of Italy to Saudi Arabia), Prof. Gianluca Pastori (History of International Relations at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan), Dr.ssa Silvia Colombo (Researcher IAI -Institute for International Affairs), by Prof. Silverio Ianniello (Professor of Economics of Monetary and Financial Markets at the University of Trieste; Vice President IPALMO - Institute for Relations between Italy and the countries of Africa, Latin America, the Middle and Far East), by Dr. Pierpaolo Grezzi (Vice President and Scientific Coordinator of IASEM).

Summer School 16-21 Luglio 2012 – Ostuni, Italia

Partner: Fondazione Konrad Adenauer / Regione Puglia

In the splendid setting of the "White City" and with the partnership of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Summer School was held on the theme "The Concept of Democracy" (III edition). The transformations of political structures in many countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean and the strong system crises that have invested the countries of the northern shore have led analysts and citizens to question what is really a democratic system and how to reach the construction of a fully-fledged democracy. Young researchers from various Mediterranean countries (attendance was recorded from Italy, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Greece) were invited to discuss a paper on the subject.
An articulated debate has developed on how democracy, on the one hand, seems to be the fulfillment of humanity’s deepest libertarian aspirations, but, on the other, also poses the problem of respect for a system of ethical reference values, without which it would be emptied and would no longer fulfil its essential task.
Nell’ambito della Summer School, si sono anche svolti 3 workshop su focus specifici:
• Banche e investimenti nel Mediterraneo
• Le infrastrutture nell’Area
• Lo spazio comune euro-mediterraneo
